How and where do the cards get the answers? This question I hear so many times and let me explain how I see it.
First, the tarot system is deeply rooted in the archetypal memory, a concept derived from Carl Jung’s idea of the collective unconscious. This means that tarot doesn’t simply predict the future but rather taps into a vast network of universal symbols, stories, and human experiences beyond the conscious mind. Each Tarot card carries an inherent meaning that has been developed over centuries, influenced by mythologies, religious traditions, psychology, and the laws of the universe.
Second, tarot cards work through energetic resonance. The act of shuffling and drawing cards is not purely random—it is influenced by the reader’s and querent’s energy. This is where synchronicity, a key Jungian principle, comes into play.
I am as reader who focus on a querent’s question and my subconscious mind interacts with the subconscious of the querent and with the cards. When I shuffle and draw the cards, I take out exactly the right cards that reflect the current or potential future of the querent’s life and situation.
Also, Tarot decks are structured through esoteric traditions, such as astrology, numerology and Kabbalah. Many Tarot decks, especially the Thoth Tarot deck incorporate planetary influences, elemental correspondence and Hebrew mysticism. And this makes each card an energetic key to deeper knowledge.
The symbolism of the Tarot cards functions as a bridge between the conscious and subconscious mind, the physical and metaphysical realm.
So, now we understand where the answers are coming from and here is the question: how do the tarot cards give answers? How to understand and interpret the symbols?
The first step is your state of mind. The reader as well as a querent must be prepared for the reading and some reader create their own tarot reading ritual.
As for me, I light the candle, practice a short 1-2 minute meditation, set the intention for the practice and then start shuffling the cards. Connecting to the querent’s request and then additionally meditating and feeling grounded helped me to deepen my connection to the cards. This is a very important step as it sets the tone for the reading, ensuring that the cards drawn resonate with the client’s current energy field.
Once the cards are laid out in a spread, the interpretation process begins. Each card has an individual meaning, but its true significance is shaped by the surrounding cards, its position within the spread, and the specific question asked. A single card can have multiple layers of interpretation, depending on whether it represents a psychological state, an external event or a spiritual lesson. As a reader, I must consider all these factors while also tuning into intuitive impressions and subconscious insights.
Patterns within the reading, such as repeated numbers, elemental dominance, or astrological connections, offer additional clues about the underlying themes. This approach ensures that Tarot does not simply provide yes-or-no answers but instead reveals the deeper forces at play, allowing the client to make empowered and informed decisions.
My role as a reader is to act as an interpreter, and spiritual guide who helps you to understand the messages from the cards related to the specific situation. My knowledge of the cards comes from many hours of study, reading books and practice. My experience helps me to combine knowledge of the meaning of the cards, feeling the energy, my intuition and life experience to make it all together a deep and insightful reading.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Tarot is that it provides absolute predictions. In reality, the Tarot is a tool for guidance rather than a rigid prophecy. The future is not set in stone, and free will plays a crucial role in shaping outcomes. My job is to help you understand what these energies represent, how they are influencing your life, and what steps you can take to navigate them wisely.
A Tarot session is not just about technical knowledge but also about creating a safe and open space where the querent feels comfortable exploring your emotions, fears, and desires. This is why Tarot is often considered a spiritual and psychological tool, rather than just a method of divination.
If Jung’s ideas about archetypes, the unconscious, and self-discovery resonate with you, imagine how they can come to life in a personalised Tarot reading.
